Honestly leafing through textbooks and memorizing dates and events is quite tedious,”Why do we have to know about our past, what do we gain from learning about it?” would be a question that everyone would’ve asked or thought of. Well do you ever regret about the things you did or said? We look back at our traces, how our ancestors lived, and the sporadic events that changed their lives and our’s. We attempt to make the present and future better and by learning about the past we can make better choices and not repeat the same mistakes twice. We learn about ourselves and to leave our trails, make our history. Learning about the past is also a part of learning and investing ourselves. In fact the past permeates the present, like in America, the belief of Manifest Destiny is still a dispute, racism, the Arizona law (quintessentially un-American, racial profiling) are some examples of what takes place today that is the result of the past. This year, our main focus was on the history of United States America starting from the beginning of civilization until today. We learned about important beliefs that allowed United States of America to expand its territory and become a global leader. “Manifest Destiny,” the belief to move Westward (of United States) and to expand territory, “expansionism,” (resulted to Spanish-American war over Cuba, purchase of Alaska, and the annexation of Hawaii). We briefly learned about the presidents and the fundamental history of USA and events that brought major changes and may have brought America as what we see today.
This picture auspiciously delineates the spirit of Manifest Destiny. The skies are darker to the west and very luminate in the east, this shows how the Americans thought they were bringing in hope. As the settlers move westward, wild animals and Native Americans are driven out.
